Unfortunately, emergency dental care is something that you don’t really think about until you’re in great pain.  The mouth is a very important and sensitive part of the body, with lots of nerve endings.  If you get anything from a chipped tooth to a gum infection you’re going to feel it right away, and you’re going to need to treat it right away.  If this happens to you in the morning, that’s great because odds are that you can get into just about any dentist.  But if this happens to you after hours you’re on your own, unless you know of an emergency dentist you can go to.

Your main goal should be taking care of your pain.  If you wake up in the middle of the night and you think you have a cavity that can probably wait until the morning, but if you have an infection or exposed nerve that’s a different story.  A good emergency dentist is going to get you in right away and do a pain assessment to see what type of pain management you need, and then the proper treatment.

If you do end up going to an emergency dentist you can rest assured knowing that they can do any procedure that a dentist that keeps regular hours can do.  Be prepared to know what to ask for ahead of time, so if you need work done you don’t have to weigh your options.  For example, if you’re going to get a cap put on you should know if you want to use gold, silver, or composite material.

Going to an emergency dentist to relieve your pain and get an assessment of what is going on with your mouth is best done right away.  The longer you wait the more pain you’re going to experience.
